A Study on the Parenting Stress and Family Support of Parents with Autistic Children

Abstract
This study was attempt to investigate th parenting stress and family support of autistic children and to provide the basic data for development of related resource program and promote wellbeing state for parent. The study subjects were 64 mothers in the one community of metropolitan city as a guardian of the autistic children. The data collected by questionnaire including general characteristics, stress level and family support status during January 2004. The data we recruited were analyzed using SPSS/PC 10.1 program. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Items of educational environment were highest score in parenting stress according to sex and age, and interpersonal relationship, parent children and parent role in orderly. And items of educational environment were highest score in parent stress by type of autistic children. 2. Perspectives of emotion and education were highest level of family and other support from other parent of autistic children. According to age group, below 10 years old group of autistic children were support by other parent, age group from 11 to 16 years old were support with emotional and educational perspectives. 3. According to the status of support by classification of autistic children, emotional support were most common support in not autistic and mild-mid type of autistic children, and severe type of autistic children were supported by other parent of autistic children. In educational perspectives, the group of not autistic and mildmid type of autistic children were supported by other parent of autistic children, severe type of autistic children were supported by the professional personnel. Therefore we should consider about the support by informational meeting with parents of autistic children, diagnostic services and therapeutic education for autistic children. And we need qualitative and quantitative promotion of protection and care service for autistic children as national level, development of individual support program that consider disability characteristics, status, and life-cycle of family of autistic children.
